Rising out of the prairie in the southern suburbs of Chicago is the bustling community of Matteson, IL. A pride and joy of this community is its 11 year old library that has been nominated for several architectural awards. But, we think what’s most impressive is inside: Kathy Berggren and her library team.
We first met Kathy when she was a student in graduate library classes at Dominican. (Courses taught by WCT partners, Sharon and Dan Wiseman.) Kathy, along with her team, has also been a frequent participant in the workshops offer by WCT through the Illinois Library Association.
Kathy has led a renaissance of the Matteson Public Library, overcoming some very troubled times. Now the library is literally busting at the seams. A recent summer reading programs garnered a 40% increase in participation, just as one example. The library’s book circulation numbers are at record levels and popular programs are standing room only. The library is getting ready to launch in a new innovation program using self check out to free up library staff and enhance its already high levels of service.
Kathy is widely recognized as a passionate advocate for the library and led the passage a critical referendum to create better services and upgrade the facility. She is actively involved in civic affairs she recently authored an article about all the ways the library contributes to the economic well being of the Matteson Community. Kathy is also a leader committed to the development of her staff and a believer in continuous improvement.
We have enjoyed our relationship with Kathy and her staff. We have provided assistance to help achieve the vital mission of the Matteson Public Library in a number of ways, and delivered a variety of services such as staff training. Most recently we worked on the all-important subject of creating superior customer service. A great service experience is something you can count on as a patron of this dynamic library.
